Movement Is Medicine

At Tubman Center for Health & Freedom, we believe movement is medicine.

Movement is about so much more than exercise. It is a powerful tool for healing our bodies, supporting our mental health, strengthening our relationships, and reconnecting with ourselves and our communities. Our Movement is Medicine program creates welcoming, community-centered spaces where everyone can experience the healing power of movement—regardless of age, fitness level, ability, or experience.

Why Movement Matters

Moderate aerobic exercise (like getting ones heart pumping during a brisk walk) is recommended for at least 30 minutes, five days a week. Because of our lifestyles in this country, we often have to be intentional about making time to move our bodies and get our hearts pumping. It’s also recommended that people do activities that engage muscles twice a week.

Some benefits of movement include:

  • Prevent and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure

  • Improve strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Increase endorphins and dopamine while lowering cortisol, supporting a healthier mind and happier brain chemistry

  • Improve sleep and energy levels

  • Build confidence and deepen our connection to community

Movement Is for Every Body

Movement as Medicine means exactly that—every body is welcome.

You do not need to be an athlete, belong to a gym, or have years of experience to participate. Never exercised before? We've got you. Returning to movement after an injury or illness? We've got you. Concerned about your balance or mobility? We've got you. Looking for something more joyful and community-centered than a traditional workout? We've got you.

Our classes are designed to meet people where they are and celebrate progress.

We will partner with your healthcare provider team at the Healing House to make sure we develop an individualized plan that works for you! They can help track our progress over time by looking at markers like: Has your breathing improved? Are you more comfortable in your body? Has your A1c decreased? Have your anxiety symptoms lessoned?
